Humanity has always left its mark, created guidelines, marked a before and after during its passage through the planet it inhabits. Many times in this step, consciously or unconsciously, the marks are positive, others not so much. The footprints remain there and have consequences on their environment.

In the current rhythm of life we move with zero awareness of where the waste we generate stops. This era, in addition to being characterized by the great milestones of science and technology, is distinguished by a fast fashion culture; in which objects and packaging with a very short useful life are generated with little or no post-use processing; becoming pollutants of the environment that surrounds us.

Within one of the dynamics of the project presented for City to City, Paris Díaz, would take a photograph in Guadalajara for Gerardo Nolasco to intervene freely, the result was something that ironically between laughter they named, New Fossils.

“In Mexico, unfortunately, only around 12% of glass containers are recycled, everything else becomes solid waste that ends up in rivers, oceans, beaches, vacant lots, on the street, buried. My intention was to surprise Gerardo with an image that generates impact, awareness, that when you look at it you will discover more elements, and leave the viewer thinking. Many of my journeys are made by bicycle or on foot. In one of these routes, I traveled on a main avenue in Guadalajara, where the sidewalk is not in the best condition, which causes garbage to accumulate. During one of my transfers, I noticed a half-buried bottle, you could see the inside of it, I noticed that inside the bottle there were plants, I don’t know if roots or what kind, which caught my attention and I thought ‘nature it makes its way into the most hostile environments and adapts no matter what. ‘ It gave me joy and at the same time I felt sadness for that fact, ‘nature making a way through the garbage that we have left’. I understood that that was the image that I wanted to send to Gerardo, that the world see what is happening with the garbage, and not only here in Mexico but everywhere, and that the message and the interpretation remain open to the viewer; the next day I took my equipment and began to photograph the object ”.

Afossil (from Classical Latin: fossilis, literally ‘obtained by digging’) is any preserved remains, impression, or trace of any once-living thing from a past geological age.

“Under the meaning of the word fossil and what it implies, we name the work with the prefix Nuevo, as a satire, due to the fact that in a few years, centuries, the new paleontologists, geologists, will discover, unearth trash, and the century XX and XXI will be characterized by generating huge amounts of solid waste and its poor processing of these generating a negative impact on the environment «

The idea that was concluded for the exhibition «Seasons of Media Arts- Connected Future» is basically that the viewer can appreciate physically the «New fossil» of Guadalajara in Germany, and that it generates awareness that all the actions we do directly or indirectly affect the environment.
